Soil Nailing in Missouri

What is Soil Nailing in Missouri?

Soil nailing in Missouri is the process of reinforcing and strengthening existing ground when construction projects are dealing with a challenging, sloped site.  Soil nails are termed passive inclusions and are a series of closely spaced steel bars, called "soil nails."  This process creates a strong, structured section that is stable, anchored and can retain the ground behind it. The reinforcements are passive as they are inserted into the ground. However, the soil nails develop reinforcement through the tension developed between ground shifting and nail interactions.  The ground shift enables the nails to "work" through the tension created by the geologic movement.  In short, soil nailing is a successful construction process because existing soil is reinforced by the nailing structure and enhances its ability to carry tensile loads.  Typically, a shotcrete facing reinforced by wire mesh is constructed as a final task.  Drainage of the site must also be meticulously designed and implemented.

What is the Process of Soil Nailing in Missouri?

The basic steps of soil nailing in Missouri are:

1.      Excavation: Shallow benches are cut in lifts of typically 4-6 feet.

2.      Nails: Steel bars or "soil nails" are inserted into the soil.

3.      Drainage: Horizontal and vertical drain strips are installed onto the face.

4.      Facing: Facing is reinforced by welded wire constructed from shotcrete.

5.      Continuing Construction: Excavation continues to the next bench and the process is repeated to completion.

Where to use Soil Nailing in Missouri?

Types of soils suitable for soil nailing in Missouri are weathered rock, clays sandy soils, tallus slope deposits, heterogeneous and stratified soils.
