Competent
rock
that requires no structural support, but protection is
required from falling rock can be covered with mesh.
The mesh is normally held in place with short rock
anchors or friction stabilizers (Split Sets). The
mesh can be welded wire fabric or chain link fence.
Because of its flexibility, chain link is the quickest to
install and will bend around contours.
After
the mesh is in place, holes are pre-drilled and friction
stabilizers are driven in place. The anchors are
split tubes that are squeezed as they are installed like
alarge automotive roll pin. Ingersoll Rand
or Friction-Lok, Inc. manufactures the anchors.
Typical spacing is a 5 to 7 foot square pattern depending
on rock conditions. Various sizes and lengths are
available, the most common requiring a 1.75 diameter hold
with a length of 4 to 6 feet.
