The Judy
Company has over 80 years of experience in structural stabilization
and foundation work, including engineering and contractor services
related to drilling and grouting for marine repair.
In a recent
project, The Judy Company‘s geotechnical staff decided to use a fast
setting sodium silicate-cement grout to perform a marine repair on an
eroding breakwater in the Milwaukee Harbor for the Corps of
Engineers. The marine repair project was contracted at a total
value of $2.4 million dollars and was completed more than a month
earlier than scheduled. Alternative marine repair proposals from
other companies, using new steel sheet pilings to encapsulate the
existing structures, ranged within $50 to $60 million.
As a marine
repair solution to the deteriorating break water, a two-phase
grouting concept was used. Phase one was accomplished by drilling
approximately 3200 holes in the concrete cap. 2600 cubic yards of
quick-set grout was injected along the outer edge of the structure
to form a barrier wall. The quick-set grout was formed by the
combination of a sodium silicate solution and a cement solution,
which became a solid in less than one minute. Phase two used the
quick-set barrier walls as a means of confining the second type of
grout, a sand/cement grout, of which 9,250 cubic yards were injected
into the center of the structure to fill the remaining void.
Over the years,
The Judy Company has developed a reputation for performing quality
work and has generated a good rapport with government agencies,
industry, utilities, other contractors and engineers.
